We tested the performance of a simple seismoscope designed by Wilhelm Hiller with a numerical model of the instrument. The name “Stossrichtungs anzeiger” used by Hiller indicates that the direction of the ground motion was the focus of the deployment of instruments in the Swabian Jura in the 1930s rather than just the detection of events. The idea of using a large number of these simple instruments to collect enough P polarities for fault plane solutions is self-evident. However, one main disadvantage of the instrument in this respect is that there is no way to determine during which part of the ground motion in an earthquake toppled the pin.
